childhood.delights

as much as you want to try the authentic nyonya's kuih in melaka, you ended up eating your heart out in your hometown, a not so nyonya and baba city yet there are enough nyonya's delight to sample.

moreover in the process of rediscovery, you re-encounter with some of your childhood delights that may not be kuching delights nyonya delicacies but definitely kuching delights that has been deeply influenced by the hokkien clan.

you are glad that your honey started to fall in love with nyonya's kuih too and is demanding for more. you know your hometown good enough to find the nyonya's kuih at the china town (carpenter street 亞答街)

the triangle carrot cake is yummy, something that you have forgotten but it's great to rekindle the taste of childhood.

another taste of childhood made of shredded turnips.

Ice kacang (shelved ice) puppy love. with plenty of red beans and candol (green jelly) inside, some are made of coconut milk but this is made with condensed milk. but the must have ingredient is gula melaka (palm sugar).

rice cake - a savory snack made of flavorful glutinous rice wrapped in a thin layer of glutinous flour skin. It has a hokkien name that commonly called as 'peng kuih' literally rice cake (飯糕) or 'bi pap bi' literally rice wrapped in rice (米包米).

'ham chi peng' - no translation to the name as this is how you know this delicacy from young... a sort of deep friend donut with five spice powder in the middle, definitely a savory snack.

'pong pia' - another sweet and savory snack that you used to eat in the afternoon when you're young. what is different now is there's no longer a red stamp on the top of the pie.

your friend brought you this cookie when she visited you and you can't recall the name another longer except knowing that it is always two size smaller than ' pong pia' and the content is sweet white bean paste.

pitcher plant with steamed glutinous rice, some called the plant 'monkey cup' and they are commonly available in the jungle of borneo.  only the sarawakian made this into a delicacy.  available from your SIL's kopitiam although there is really nothing special about the taste beside it is steamed in the pitcher plant.

you are going to miss all these nyonya delights and childhood delicacies. but you are thankful that you are able to try them all once again this trip and rekindle your taste of childhood that brought back so many memories.
