you saw the billboard about kota Kinabalu jazz festival when you're on your way to pick your sister from the airport. you inquire about the event and she got you the entrance to the jazz festival through her friend.
and so you went there tonight. at the sutera harbor yacht club open space.
there's an interesting gong performance where a good use of traditional sabahan instruments mixed with modern. kadazan rhythm mix but the entire performance is not jazz.
another performance by an australian dude. well, it's a skill to use 5 instruments at any one time but this is seriously no jazz.
one of the decent jazz big band, the guy played decent trumpet and saxophone.
and the last malay band is jazz indeed but the vocal is not up to expectation.
you left before the event is over. it's too warm and you have been sweating and perspiring whole night. you had some moments of enjoyment but most of the time you were bored.
what can be done better? perhaps remove the chairs so that everyone feel more relax, at ease and flow with the music. you feel like swinging your body but you are confine by the chair and the crowds.
and most importantly, let the "jazz" be "jazz".
