this is something that you really looking forward to do. the indigo dye, this is really something not to be missed if one is in the hakka heartland sanyi ( 三義). you came to choye cottage first thing in the morning to get your hand dirty!
first you make your choices of what you want to do, by selecting it based on the products on display
then the lady at the workshop will explain the techniques, the methods and demonstrate how to tie them using the rubber bands, chopstick and the little wood planks....
then it's a matter for you to take time to pleat and create the motifs you want on your print
once that is done, put on the apron and the hand groves, and it's time to get your hand really dirty...
you have to soak the cloth in the dye, gently massaging the cloth and move it around in the dye for about 3 minutes
then it's the matter of air drying it in front of the fan, and you have to repeat the dying, drying for about 7 or 8 times before the color is balanced and appearing in solid blue...
it's all hard work and you can see that from the expression of this boy, getting impatient with the process. it's also a good way to train up your patience which is virtue!
you start watching the clock and counting the 3 minutes after every dipping and after an hour of repetition, your product is almost ready. then it's a moment of truth when you untied the rubber band and your creation appearing in front of you.
you're delighted, pleased! and it all worth the hard work.
feeling very accomplished today!
