do you know masak-masak? it's a malay word for cooking and masak-masak is mostly refers to kids playing with cooking...
there is no particular occasion or any special reason for open house, and neither any particular reason why 29th december is the day. it is just an impromptu decision to gather well... let's say almost all malaysians that i know from facebook who so happened available for a feast....
these are what we cooked...
nasi kuning (yellow rice) with turmeric powder and curry leave. simple and easy to make and the fragrance goes well with any coconut, curry or chili based dishes...
kacangma chicken, a typical and authentic sarawak dish. it is a tonic chicken with lots of ginger and rice wine. the greenish color comes from the herb kacangma...
his signature roasted pork belly
soy sauce pork trotter with mushroom and peanut
rojak - mixed fruit salad with shrimp paste. this wasn't on my menu until i was at the grocery store where i saw a plastic can of shrimp paste for rojak, and then i found the fried tofu (tofu pok) and then the key ingredient jicama also lying at the store. so rojak is it. only on the list at the very last minute.
and many yummy food contributed by all the kampung ladies who attended this occasion. as you can see we ended up with ample of food!!
indonesian style layer cake, fried stuff tofu, sarawak steam cakes
macaroni cheese for the kids, fusion style popiah, nyonya style rempah udang
indian style pork vorval, chicken rendang, glutinous rice chicken
fried crab and shrimp roll, sambal udang, indian style pickles (acar)
the feast begins... kids and adults alike attacking the food...
the kids corner. i am amazed at how well trained these kids are... they are really well behaved in our not so kid friendly home...

agar agar delight - the white layer is made of coconut milk and the black layer is made of gula java. i ran out of gula melaka completely and found the closest substitute in gula java (java palm sugar)
tiramisu, i made this because it is quick and easy. also some kids like this very much and thus i have to reduce the amount of alcohol almost to minimum...
my first attempt of black sesame chiffon cake (look wise not so successful) , i basically just reuse the recipe of rose chiffon and substitute the rose elements with black sesame paste. although it doesn't rise as high my rose chiffon, but it does taste delicious...
also some leftover rose chiffon cake, also a favorite of the day itself.
i think we have in total fifteen adults and seven kids running around at the prime time.
it was fun, rather effortless especially when everyone is bringing something. love the exchange of food and ideas and some small talks won't harm either...

on the other hand, i can see how facebook really transform the social network nowadays... frankly speaking i still believe there are blessings and curses of facebook. thankfully for me, i am not addicted and neither have i abuse facebook for other purpose and the blessing is i got to know more of my own kampung girls in the lowland and some of them i can call them friends...
p/s: some photos are taken by a talented photographer who uses the same camera as me but her photos seems to be more charming...
