sinterklaas

happy saint nicolas day! sinterklaas as the dutch say it...DSC_0720

fifth december is an annual dutch festive day, especially for the kids... most dutch take this day more seriously than the christmas day.

sinterklaas (saint nicolas) is like the santa claus (yes, the one in the middle with a baby face) but he has a few black kids (zwarter piet) following him... legend or rather tradition says that sinterklaas keeps a record of each kid, if the kids are behaving well in the year, he/she will receive a poem of praises and something like that... if you are interested please google the story yourself. kungfu panda doesn't fit into the sinterklaas story at all, but since i have already made it, might as well get it on the cake, likewise the fruits/vegetables and flowers...

around this time of the year, most supermarkets/bakery will start selling almond paste (marzipan) miniatures in all shape and that is how project fantasy started. instead of buying the manufactured marzipan why not applying my own creativity into edible sculptures or arts.

as you can see, it is not perfect and it wasn't my intention to make a white pillow either. i made some clumsy mistakes when covering the cake with fondant and so have to touch up with some lace to pretty up the edge of the cake.

so, for now project fantasy is over. i am not sure if i will be in the baking maniac again this year but if i do have time and am in the mood, i will do some for christmas...

since this is a gift to a five year old boy, so there is no photo of the innards.

if you are celebrating this occasion, happy sinterklaas day!

yes terri, all hand made! i think i have gone a step too far, now am thinking of making angels/fairies for Christmas.
Haring? That's remind me i haven't have it for awhile, it's very cool and dull here, don't feel like eating the cold haring yet.. but i like your lebanese curry!
