Shabu-shabu

We decided to eat out tonight and almost everyone we know have been to Shabu-Shabu, the kind of all you can eat Japanese buffet runs by Chinese except us. Since there is an outlet at our city, so we decided to check it out.
First of all, we were surprised it was full house on a weekday and it was very noisy. The ambiance doesn't give you any serenity and the peace of mind to enjoy Japanese food. There is a missing of the ritual but then again we are not in Japan.
Food wise, it is a mixed experience for us, but over all it comes slightly upon our rather low expectation.

Sea bream and Mackerel sushi is the one that we ordered almost every round. The flesh are fresh and they are expensive fish. The hand-roll came with soggy nori and the California roll contains too much of mayonnaise.
Love the grilled squid, we ordered this all 4 rounds. The lamb is suckling soft and moist, we ordered more than once as well. Then the takoyaki, smaller than the ones in Japan but I actually prefer this over the real stuff in Japan. Since it is a smaller ball, the starch are cooked to well done and not half liquid, so a thumb up for this. The tempura shrimps are fresh and prepared as you ordered and thus crisp but the batter is rather rough...
Then come some of the disaster orders, the tempura vegetables are greasy and not eatable at all. Likewise the gyoza that doesn't look like gyoza.
The soup udon is an average dish but the udon itself is superb, it just has the right texture of what udon should be as in Japan. We tried to ask a waiter we know if he knows where the udon comes from but didn't get an answer.

Johannes too full to open his eyes....
