Istanbul modern art museum, located in a converted warehouse in Tophane district on the Bosphorus, is the first of its kind in Turkey.

It was a wonderful and sunny Boxing Day morning when we arrived at this museum. The view of Bosphorus towards the Topkapi Palace and Sultanahmet is superb.

The collections are quite extensive although largely done by the Istanbul artists/painters. The concept is similar to Tate Modern in London housed in a converted warehouse. One of the sections touched on erotic/sex subject is quite daring for a Muslim city and proves that Istanbul indeed is a modern and cosmopolitan city that accepts the freedom in arts. There are plenty of multimedia display and one that I been to is called headless woman or belly dancer, a film produced in 1974 which I find quite confronting for a Muslim country. I immediately relates this to the late artist Theo van Gogh who was murdered in Amsterdam after producing a film called ‘fitna’. Perhaps he has his inspiration from Nil Yalter?
