While clearing my dad’s possession after the funeral, we discovered many things among all, a cheque book that belongs to my grandfather. I never meet my grandpa as he passed away while I was still unborn. I only recognize him through a portrait that hanging on the wall back home where he had the official suit on. From what I was told, my grandpa - Joseph Chia Kui Chai, was a Kapitan or a mayer for the town called Bau in Sarawak. Bau is a small town that once upon a time a gold mine, located not too far from Kuching (perhaps an hour or two drive on a winding road). Bau also has another common name that we use more oftenly, i.e. Shak Lo Muen (石路门)in Hakka and means ‘Rock Entrance’. From my memory, I could still recall dad used to bring us to Bau with the Opel car for a day trip sometimes. There is a man-made lake at the center of the town which used to be the gold mine field before it is filled with water and turned into a lake. Grandpa has a big mansion on top of the hill and a road that name after him. We always visited some relatives that run a kopitiam in the town. Yeah, those were the time, rather flur memories but those memories, will last for a long long time….
