Kyoto Food: Dorayaki 三笠

20th December 2008

I bought this from Arashimaya it is called Dorayaki or Mikasa (三笠) in Kyoto dialect. Dorayaki is sweet bean paste sandwiched between two waffle-like pancakes. The pancake is soft and fluffy and the anko (red bean paste) is not too sweet, so that one can still taste of the original flavor of the coarse azuki beans.

From what I recalled from my childhood, this is the famous food eaten by Doraemon. This particular one has the stamp of Kyoto (京都) and Arashiyama (嵐山) as you can see from the stamp on the pancake. One thing I like about eating the red bean pancake here is they are not sweet at all and the coarseness of the anko bean brings forth the freshness and the fragrance of the bean.
